Watermark was awarded a contract to provide licensed industrial wastewater treatment operators (Grade 4I) and additional support staff as necessary for the Operation &Maintenance, Long Term Monitoring, and optimization of the on-site groundwater and soil remediation system. This project involved active groundwater and soil vapor extraction and on-site physical/chemical treatment to remove contaminants from groundwater and soil prior to discharging to the stormwater system.
The source of the contamination was attributed primarily to an unleaded gasoline pipeline release at the petroleum distribution facility. Also contributing to the contamination was the accidental overfilling of a diesel fuel underground storage tank and various other overfills to vehicles in the pipe rack area of the distribution facility. Contaminants include methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE); benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX); and volatile petroleum hydrocarbons (VPHs) in groundwater, and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil. Concentrations of benzene, MTBE, and C5-C8 aliphatic hydrocarbon fractions in groundwater exceeded Massachusetts Contingency Plan Method 1 GW-2 and/or GW-3 standards. Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL) is intermittently detected in some monitoring wells.
